Abstract

Stone received his professional training at Los Angeles College of Optometry. He entered the army in December 1942 and was stationed at the newly established Deming Army Airfield. He was assigned to the flight surgeon's office to provide vision examinations for flight personnel.

In addition to this duty he also examined prisoners of war from Camp Lordsburg brought to the Deming Army Airfield by the "truckload." He did not have much contact with the prisoners and only recalls talking with two of them who appeared to him to have been "in charge of the cadres."

He states that the explosion was heard and the flash was seen at Deming when the first atomic bomb was tested at the McDonald Ranch on the White Sands Proving Ground in July 1945.
